TRICK PHOTOGRAPHY

CREATING SURREAL, FANTASY OR CREATIVE PHOTOS CAN BE “TRICKY”

WITHOUT KNOWING THE BASICS OF TRICK PHOTOGRAPHY.

Why Trick Photography?

Trick photography attracts attention. It is used in many types of marketing materials, from magazines to Facebook. Our minds love to try to unravel what is happening in the images we see. The image below is by me Ross Goodman of Goodman Photography . I wondered what it would be like to capture a whole hair cut in a single image. I would watch my barber in the mirror dynamically trimming as a dance and wanted to have that in the photo.

This photo was a 10 sec long exposure in near complete darkness. There was a single over head light for the hands as I needed to show movement. Jason, the barber, had designated spots he would move around as I would "pop" the flash in order to freeze him partially, but I still wanted fast movements with the hands. A dangerous combination in a low light situation.

Where to Start?

So you want to dive in and make trick photos? Getting started generally consists of falling into a rabbit hole of Youtube videos, Attempt and fail for years on end or pay thousands for expensive master classes. Personally I'm a fan of self paced materials like E-Books. One of my favorite E-Books is by Evan Sharboneau, Trick Photography and Special Effects. This program has 295 pages of instruction, 9 hours of how-to video tutorials, and contains over 300 creative photographs that you can draw from and craft your photography skills.
